Don’t mention the national broadband strategy to anyone living in areas where it remains difficult to even get a mobile phone signal but visitors and locals in some of county Mayo’s tourism hotspots could soon be able to avail of public wifi around the county.
Mayo County Council is inviting tenders for the design, supply and installation of a fully supported Wi-Fi network for 45 outdoor public access points, at designated locations around County Mayo.

The project is being funded by the WiFi4EU initiative which promotes free access to Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens in public spaces including parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, health centres and museums in municipalities throughout Europe.
Under the programme vouchers to the value EUR 15 000 are provided to install Wi-Fi equipment in public spaces within the areas that are not already equipped with a free Wi-Fi hotspot.
Mayo County Council have set a closing date at the end of January on their official notice for any suppliers interested.
